Have you ever seen so many bee stings on a horse?
It was a late Saturday afternoon when the Heartland KZN team experienced a shocking incident that underscored the very real dangers bees pose to horses. After bringing the horses back from a neighbour’s field that generously allowed us access to grazing, we noticed something alarming— our big black horse was in distress. Upon closer inspection, we discovered he had been swarmed by bees, resulting in over 1,000 bee stings covering his body. The swelling was so severe that it compromised his breathing, leaving us all in a state of shock, this was our first time dealing with an emergency of this nature. The team had never dealt with bee stings on a horse before.

Understanding the Threat: Why Bee Stings Are Dangerous for Horses
Bee stings can lead to severe allergic reactions in horses, similar to what we might experience as humans. In this case, the swelling was so extensive that it not only caused immense pain but also threatened the horse’s airways. Quick action is crucial; every moment counts when a horse is struggling to breathe. The swelling can block air passage, leading to potential suffocation if not addressed immediately.
Bee stings on a horse : Quick Action Saves Lives
With our regular veterinarians unreachable—Dr Van Tonder was participating in the Duzi canoe race and Dr Barnard was at a family function— so we quickly reached out to our local horse emergency support group on Whatsapp. Thankfully, we had ample medications on hand but needed urgent assistance with administering a shot of Dexa (dexamethasone) to combat the swelling.
Despite our initial panic, we sprang into action, administering a series of medications to stabilize the horse:
- Allergex: An antihistamine to reduce allergic reactions.
- Phenergan: A very powerful antihistamine that provides further relief from swelling.
- Finadyne Paste: A non-steroidal anti-inflammatory that alleviates pain and inflammation.
- Prednisolone: Used for treatment of equine asthma syndrome when recurrent airway obstruction (RAO) occurs
- Trophy Supplement: An incredible supplement, the horse was already on a weekly maintenance dose of this excellent immunity booster, we gave him an extra dose to support his recovery. (click here to order)
Additionally, we towel-washed the horse with cold water and then sprayed each sting with Effivet Skin & Wound Hydrogel, a treatment safe for even the most sensitive areas, including around his eyes, which were swollen shut and extremely hot. Effivet is a clear, pH neutral, non-irritating and safe hydrogel liquid Hydrogels are recommended for wounds that range from dry to mildly exudating and can be used to degrade slough on the wound surface. Thanks to the Coastal Horse Care Unit, we were able to secure the Dexa shot just in time.
The relief was palpable as we watched the swelling slowly begin to reduce after about 45 minutes, enabling him to breathe more easily and survive until he could receive the necessary shot of Dexa, Danny & Sherri from CHCU soon arrived with the crucial medicine we needed. The following morning, he was treated with Thermal Mud and continued a few days of prednisolone for recovery.
